Frederick County, Virginia is the northernmost point in Virginia at the mouth of the Shenandoah Valley. The county seat is Winchester, and the county has approximately 78,400 living there. First occupied by Native Americans, the first Europeans arrived in the Shenandoah Valley in 1632. Traders, trappers, and more explorers started coming to the area by the 1650s. Early settlers included the Quakers, and the Hopewell Friends Meeting House they built is still standing near Clearbrook. The fertile soils, abundant water, and vast forests drew settlers to the area. In 1738, Frederick County was established, made up of parts taken from Orange County.
Historical Frederick County has many sites to visit. The Belle Grove Plantation offers tours of a restored manor house built in 1797. The plantation offers many objects of historical interest, as well as tours of the outbuildings and the surrounding land. The Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Park are part of the United State National Historical Parks. They offer self-guided battlefield tours and ranger programs which teach about the history and ultimate settlement of the Shenandoah Valley as well as the Battle of Cedar Creek and the following impacts. The Newtown History Center focuses on Stephens City, promoting the preservation of the buildings, the landscapes, and artifacts connected with the history of the small town. By bringing in residents and visitors, the hope is to engage people in the life and culture of the region. Another historic area is Fort Bowman, also known as Harmony Hall. It is located in the national historic district near Middletown. The historic home was built by Pennsylvania German settlers around 1753. Tours are offered of the home and surrounding land. There are many towns and unincorporated areas in Frederick County, each with their own local amenities. You will find sports centers that offer playing fields, golf courses, cultural opportunities as well as shopping and dining.
