Clarke County is a county in Virginia. In 1722 the area was occupied by the Six Nations Iroquois, but in 1744 Governor Gooch purchased the area from them as part of the Shenandoah Valley purchase. The county was named in honor of the Revolutionary War hero George R. Clark. In 1836 the county divided off of Frederick County, obtaining its own status as a county. The county has approximately 14,500 people living in it. Clarke County is full of history. Toward the end of the 18th century, many of Tidewaters prestigious people settled in Clarke County, bringing with them a plantation lifestyle. That lifestyle flourished until the Civil War. During the war, many skirmishes took place in the county, and well-marked sites of those areas remain. Although the area was devastated by the Civil War, many old plantation homes still stand today.
Clarke County is known for its beautiful land. The Shenandoah River sits at the foot of mountains, and rolling hills extend beyond the river. There are planned open spaces provided by communities to offer opportunities to observe the scenic beauty. The Appalachian Trail offers hiking, and the Shenandoah river gives you a chance to fish, kayak, or canoe. There are trails for horseback riding, and golf courses for additional outdoor fun. Award-winning wineries can be found in Clarke County, offering the view of the mountains or the valley below. Throughout the county, you’ll find country inns, restaurants and a variety of entertainment from art shows to hot air balloon rides. With the rich history, there are many museums and historic sites to visit.
Clarke County real estate is a combination of many styles, including Federal style, antebellum styles, ranches, cottages, and log cabins. Mixed in are contemporary homes, depending on the town and location. Rich in history and beauty, each area of Clarke County has its own specific charm. Whether you do a driving tour of the countryside or walk through downtown Berryville, the county seat, you’ll find something of interest. Areas to the east are more developed, but when you cross the Shenandoah River, you find yourself in rural areas, making Clarke County a place that has something for everyone and is a must consider destination for homebuyers searching in the Shenandoah Valley area.
