Stay up to date on the Middleburg market
The town of Middleburg was established in 1787 by Leven Powell who was an American Revolutionary War Lieutenant Colonel and Virginia statesman. In 1763, Powell purchased the land from the first cousin of George Washington, Joseph Chinn, for approximately $2.50 per acre. Initially, people wanted to name the newly formed town after Powell, but he declined, so it was called Middleburgh before it was changed to only Middleburg. The city was created on the Ashby Gap trading route which is now U.S. Route 50 between the port of Alexandria and Winchester. During the early 1900s, Middleburg became a hot spot for prominent visitors from across the U.S. to participate in foxhunting and steeplechasing. It wasn’t long before Middleburg became known as the "Nation's Horse and Hunt Capital." The Middleburg Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is comprised of the 19th-century town center. The oldest structure in Middleburg is the Red Fox Inn & Tavern which was built by Chinn in 1728 and named Chinn's Ordinary initially. It is also the oldest running inn in the United States of America.
Since Middleburg is only an hour away from downtown Washington, D.C., it maintains its small-town charm while enjoying the amenities of the big city. If you’re looking for more to do, travel to Washington, D.C. and visit some of the great malls there. Residents of Middleburg like to frequent places such as DC USA located at 3100 14th St NW. This 890,000-square-foot shopping and entertainment complex features a modern design and is anchored by a few big-name retail stores and trendy eateries. Another place that should be mentioned is the Washington Golf & Country Club which is at 3017 North Glebe Road in Arlington. The golf course sits on land once owned by Admiral M. Preston Rixey, Surgeon General of the Navy and White House physician. It’s been around since 1922 and was frequented by former Presidents of the United States such as Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, Coolidge, Harding and Wilson.
