The City of Fairfax, Virginia, was founded in 1805. It is an enclave situated within the borders of Fairfax County and is a part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city and county are both named for Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron who was given five million acres of land in northern Virginia by King Charles. On June 1, 1861, the Battle of Fairfax Court House took place here and is historically the first land battle between Union Soldiers and the rebels. On June 27, 1863, a second battle occurred resulting in a defeat for the Union Army. In 1859, it was decided to change the name to the “Town of Fairfax.” Approximately 15 years later, it was officially incorporated as a town.
