Round Hill is located in Loudoun County and is approximately 52 miles from Downtown Washington, D.C. The town is named due to its proximity to a 910-foot mesa that was used by Confederate and Union troops as a signaling post during the American Civil War. Round Hill was officially incorporated in 1900 and was a depot for the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad, which brought agricultural products from surrounding farms to the Washington, D.C. area. Many of the old homes still standing today from that era used to be boarding houses, inns, and taverns where travelers would go between stops. The town became known as a convenient stop and popular weekend destination since it was close to places such as the Appalachian Trail, Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath, Shenandoah River, and Shenandoah National Park, among others. Today, the town has seen a lot of growth as outer Washington, D.C. suburban cities begin to expand to its borders.
