The town of Middleburg was established in 1787 by Leven Powell who was an American Revolutionary War Lieutenant Colonel and Virginia statesman. In 1763, Powell purchased the land from the first cousin of George Washington, Joseph Chinn, for approximately $2.50 per acre. Initially, people wanted to name the newly formed town after Powell, but he declined, so it was called Middleburgh before it was changed to only Middleburg. The city was created on the Ashby Gap trading route which is now U.S. Route 50 between the port of Alexandria and Winchester.
