Manassas, Virginia borders Prince William County, Manassas Park, and Fairfax County. Manassas is the county seat of Prince William County. Although Manassas surrounds the county courthouse, that property is not part of the city but is considered county property. In 1861 the first major battle of the Civil War, the First Battle of Bull Run, took place near where Manassas exists today. A second battle also took place in the same general area. Following the war, the area grew into a town, and Manassas was incorporated in 1873. In 1975 it was incorporated as an independent city and separated from Prince William County. Today some 41,200 people call Manassas home.
The City of Manassas has several historic sites. The Manassas National Battlefield Park is the site of two major Civil War battles as well as a landmark stone bridge, which was rebuilt in 1884. The park covers 5,000 acres with a visitor’s center offering exhibits of uniforms and weapons as well as information on the battles. There is also a gift shop and bookstore. The Manassas Museum offers exhibits on the Civil War and local history. They have a permanent exhibit that covers the history of Native American people through the 20th century, with emphasis on the Civil War. Living history portrayals bring to life spies, soldiers, slaves, generals and presidents from the past. Another historical site is the Ben Lomond Historic Site. Built in 1832, Ben Lomond was used as a hospital following the Battle of First Manassas. Federal soldiers occupied the property in 1862. Tours of the Civil War hospital offer the ability to see, smell, hear, smell and taste history. They also have a restored slave quarter, dairy and smokehouse. If you want to switch to different activities, classical music, opera, and theater can be found at the Hylton Performing Arts Center. The center stays busy throughout the year with a variety of programs as well as connecting with schools and community organizations for activities.
