The unincorporated village of Waterford is located in the Catoctin Valley in Loudoun County, Virginia, and is approximately 47 minutes away from Washington, D.C. Waterford and the surrounding area is a National Historic Landmark District, boasting a well-maintained 18th and 19th-century character. In 1733, a man named Amos Janney purchased 400 acres of land in what is now modern-day Waterford. Janney built a gristmill and sawmill on his property in the 1740s, and it soon a settlement was formed in the area that was called "Janney's Mill." Due to the success of the two mills, the growing town quickly became the center of business for grain growers. Since some of the immigrants who helped establish the town were Irish, they began to call it the town Waterford after a village in Ireland. Though Waterford was often caught in the middle of fierce fighting between Unionist and Confederate partisan units, the large Quaker population stayed loyal to the Union and were known to help slaves escape.Today, Waterford is mostly a residential village with a few businesses based here.
