Fauquier County lies in Northern Virginia. The county seat is Warrenton, and the county has approximately 65,200 people living there. The area was first inhabited by the Whonkentia who were forced out by the Manahoac who was then forced out by the Iroquois. In the Treaty of Albany in 1722, the Six Nations ceded the area to Virginia Colony. Fauquier County was established in 1759 from Prince William County and named after the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia at the time, Francis Fauquier who is said to have gained the land in a poker game. Fauquier County has a rich history associated with the Civil War, and there are many self-driven as well as guided tours, historical trail markers and museums that share much of the history of the many skirmishes in which the cavalry and infantry took part. The county is known for its equestrian tradition and many wineries and vineyards, known to be at the heart of wine and hunt country. With famous horse farms and rolling land at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this natural area of beauty is a contrast to the more bustling parts of Northern Virginia.
Recreation is an important part of life in Fauquier County, and the Recreation Department works diligently to enhance the quality of life for all residents in the county. By working in hand with the people, the department strives to provide the leadership to assure high-quality recreational facilities and services are available and to also work toward the preservation of local history.
The Fauquier Wine Trail offers over 26 wineries for visitation. There are also several pristine parks that make available playgrounds, trails for hiking, and waterways for boating and fishing. There are also agricultural opportunities to learn about the workings of farms and orchards. The arts are also well represented in Fauquier County. There are many galleries that exhibit paintings, sculptures, and photography, as well as pottery, jewelry, and home décor items. The theatre is also represented, with a variety of performing arts and lessons in music and dance.
