Stay up to date on the Reston market
Reston, North Virginia, is considered by some to be the spark that reignited the interest in the concept of creating perfectly designed planned communities. It’s not a city but rather a census-designated place (CDP) located the upper northwestern part of Fairfax County, Virginia. Reston is also a member of the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The concept of this nationally known planned community was the brainchild of Robert E. "Bob" Simon, Junior, whose family immigrated from Germany to New York before the turn of the 20th century. Simon’s family were in the real estate management and development business and owned Carnegie Hall before selling it at the very beginning of the 1960s. When Simon graduated from Harvard University, he took his share of the money his family made from the Carnegie Hall deal and employed Conklin Rossant Architects with the task of creating a master-planned community of a higher commercial and residential density than other cities in the United States. The idea was to conserve open space by practicing mixed-use development strategies that smoothly blended industrial structures, business buildings, recreational facilities, educational institutions, and residential housing into one cohesive entity. It was Simon’s goal to offer a community centered around maintaining a higher quality of life for its citizens while allowing them to live, work, and play without the need of commuting long distances.
Today, Simon’s vision still lives on in a more modern version of Reston. Residents enjoy Reston’s proximity to downtown Washington D.C., which is only 35 minutes away via VA-267 E and I-66 E. This gives you ease of access to all the hot spots in the D.C. area. You have CityCenterDC which is located at 825 10th St NW. CityCenterDC is a sizeable modern shopping center that utilizes mixed-use space by combining its collection of high-end retail shops and ritzy restaurants with office buildings, two luxury apartment buildings, a luxury hotel, and a recreational park. If you’re a lover of animals, there is the National Zoological Park located at 3001 Connecticut Ave NW. The zoo is one of the oldest of its kind in the United States and doesn’t charge visitors admission since it is a part of the Smithsonian Institution. In addition to that, Reston is surrounded by cultural and historical venues. With so many to pick, it can be challenging to pick a place to start. One of the most recognized nationally and internationally is the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum which is located at 100 Raoul Wallenberg Pl SW in Washington D.C. Then there is the National Museum of American History located at 1300 Constitution Ave NW. For those looking for something more exciting, there is the Six Flags America theme park located 50 minutes away in Bowie, Maryland, at 13710 Central Avenue.
When European settlers began establishing colonies in the Washington D.C. area, they brought with them their architecture. This can be seen firsthand in the city of Reston where you’re bound to see various single-family home plans that include French Country, Craftsman, Country, Bungalow, Shingle, Ranch, Traditional, Tudor, Northwestern, Prairie, Colonial, and others. All properties for sale in Reston also differ in style depending on the architect and builder involved.
